Literacy for early years
Persuasive Writing - Drama
This is a chance for students to practice their persuasive techniques in a way that is not just writing. Students have to create a drama skit of a news broadcast or a TV advert to promote their school. It has slides for students to write down their research about the school, a storyboard for them to fill out about their performance, a marking schedule and a reflection slide. It is a great task for students to complete in groups and something they can get on with without much need for teacher support.
Reading - event analysis
This is a good task to get students analysing an event. It could also be used in history or social studies.
Fun literacy activity
This activity gets students to listen to a story read out by the teacher and colour in their picture accordingly. After it gets them to have a go at wrtiting their own story and creating a colouring in page to go along with it. There is also a marking schedule attached so students know when they have completed the task well. This is best used over a week so students can edit their writing and drawings.
First day activity
This is a great activity for the first few days of school. It is also a great writing sample to figure out where your students are at.
Paragraph Writing
This task includes several instructions for completing a paragraph. These instructions can be used by the students to peer mark the completed paragraph.
First week back - Writing
This is a great task for students to complete in their first week back at school after a term break. It gets them to practice using good language in their work.
Sentence Starters
This resource includes a few different worksheets that gets students to learn about some different sentence starters and then practice this knowledge. There is also a teacher copy of a worksheet that requires answers and a marking schedule for a writing task that can either be used to peer mark or self mark work.
Comparing and Contrasting
This is a reading worksheet that focuses on comparing and contrasting. There are 3 pages worth of activities to do that includes reading text and explaining answers in their own words.
Similes and Metaphors
This is a 2 page worksheet that gets students to practice using metaphors and similes so that they can remember what each is.
Christmas Worksheets
This includes 3 worksheets. One for math, one for reading and one one for writing. Each worksheet should take around 30 minutes minimum depending on student ability. They are all based around Christmas.
Homework Choiceboard
This is a choiceboard that includes 5 tasks for reading, writing and mathematics. The math tasks are based around multiplication, division, addition and subtraction.
Create a Poem
This is a slide that gets students to practice using figurative language when creating a poem. There are four different types of figurative language they must include in their poem as well as a marking schedule for them to follow. Part of the task also gets students to write out their poem onto A4 paper in order for the completed work to be displayed.
